Explanations / Selvityksiä

Autumn 2000 I had an exhibition called "Selvityksiä" (Explanations).
It took place in Kluuvin galleria, which is part of the Art Museum of City of Helsinki.
Displayed works of art have references to sciences.
Each work has got framed board with explanatory text, which you find here under the pictures.

Synopsis of the original Finnish version.

Sense of balance is located in brain.
It handles information from: 1)muscles, tendons and joints; 2)soles; 3)balance organ of inner ear; 4)visual center of posterior part of brain.
Deficient function of any of these (except visual center) causes dizziness and inbalance. If balance weakens, it can be treated by controlling the sight.
Meniere's sickness' symptoms are fits of spinning dizziness, weak hearing and humming in ears. Patient senses world turning and falling.
Prosper Ménière (1799 - 1862) planned cure for symptoms of the disease named after him. It affects fooling the visual center. Patient is placed before big swaying mirror. The idea is to compensate patient's mistaken feeling of turning and falling surroundings.
Healthy person using the cure feels the symptoms of the disease. Cure has influence.




Rorschach and blueberries





Synopsis of the original Finnish version.

Swiss Hermann Rorschach's (1884 - 1922) ink blot test is one of the best method for psychodiagnosis.
Patient is asked to describe, what occurs to him/her when shown ink blots.
Answers can be interpreted as subconscious motives and needs of investigated person.
When Hermann was schoolboy he had to, just like other schoolchildren, collect and dry plants during summer vacation.
End of the summer plant press was full, and Hermann was forced to dry plants between books.
One day he pressed blueberries between few books, forgetting to use blotting papers.
Berries stained pages. He felt guilty, and saw frightening images in blots.




Rorschach and red wine




Synopsis of the original Finnish version.

Once upon time during his studies in Zurich, Hermann invited friends to his appartment.
He had tablecloth on the table, which he folded to protect it.
Red wine was intended to be served and drunk on uncovered side of the table.
Anyway, discuss was fierce and hands were moving. One of the glasses fell over and wine was soaked in folded tablecloth at two locations.
Next day having hangover he was cleaning relics of yesterday and suddenly saw the wine blots in open folded tablecloth with new eyes.
Blots were symmetrical, and they reminded him of something.

A moebius' band can be made of paper by twisting a narrow strip half circle (180°), and then clueing ends together.
This band has got only one side (surface) and one edge. You can prove it by following the surface or edge.
A bag like above, seen from different sides, can be made by "streching" the moebius' band.
Its inside surface continues along the handle out.
You can think it doesn't have outside at all and that inside this bag is the whole universe, exept the bag itself.




Mrs. Moebius' knittings





Synopsis of the original Finnish version.

Once upon time, to be exact, autumn 1790 Mrs. Moebius was pregnant. She started to knit for the baby she'll soon bear. She used knitting needles, which are connected to each other to get seamless result. But when she was knitting, she felt something is wrong. After she knitted three evenings, she noticed the blue thread was too dark. She had to start over.

Next day she bought light green thread. She started to knit pattern with pearl-like structure. After she knitted three evenings, she thought: "Nice pattern, but it looks very girlish. I just feel I'm having a boy-baby." So she had to start it over.

Next day she bought light blue thread. "This time I choose pattern with squares. It will be nice for him." she decided. But after she knitted three evenings, she noticed pattern with squares had thicker and thinner places, which would feel like seams on sensitive skin of baby. "I still have time to start over." she thought.

Next day she went again to buy new thread. The thread shop had run out of light blue thread and light green thread. There was left only dark colors and light yellow and uncolored white thread. So she bought uncolored and thought: "I can have it colored afterwards." After she knitted three evenings, she noticed she had knitted half circle twisted. And she took the earlier knitting and saw she had done the same error four times. It was funny that all the knittings were twisted cones. And she decided to start over.

So next day she bought the last suitable thread, the light yellow. There wasn't much time left so she didn't make ball of the skein. She could as well knit directly from the skein.

Next day she was lost in thought and started again knitting. This time from the other end of the light yellow thread. And she continued like this. Every other day the other knitting than day before.

In the sixth evening she had knitted three evenings from both ends of the light yellow thread. And there was no more left in the skein. Now she had two half done knittings connected together. And also both of these she had knitted half circle twisted. She had to laugh. "Now I did a double failure. I have nothing use for these, except making good feeling. I save these and my boy will have good laugh when he grows up." she said to herself.
The next morning she gave birth to boy. He was christen August Fernand Moebius (1790 - 1868). He invented so called moebius' band (strip), which had big influence to topology. It can be made of paper by twisting a narrow strip half circle (180°), and then clueing ends together. This band has got only one side (surface) and only one edge.

In topology is studied those charasteristics of geometrical figures (like lines, surfaces and objects),
which depend only on locations of parts of the figure, without taking measurements into consideration.
One of the best known unsolved problem in topology is so called four color map.
The task is to color, with as few colors as possible, different regions in a map, so that neighboring areas have always different color.
Generally is accepted as a truth, that no more than four colors is needed, no matter the form or quantity of the regions.
The map I made for the exhibition is divided into six regions.
With mentioned conditions it can't be colored less than six colors, because each six region is neigbor with all the other regions.
