Ulkosynnytinaihe arkkitehtuurikilpailujen menestystekijänä (Vaginal subject as a success factor in architectural competitions) The book reveals a surprising discovery and makes visible some hidden reality. I wrote and compiled the material for the research publication at Saruya AiR residency in Japan 2023. The study is based on web sources of SAFA, the Association of Finnish Architects.
I thank Saruya AiR for the residence, and The Scandinavia-Japan Sasakawa Foundation for making it possible.
"The frequent presence of converging double arches, like parallel parentheses (), in the winning works of architectural competitions proves that it is a success factor. The research reveals the effects of subconscious vision when making decisions and choices. Apparently, even for the competition participants, the appearance of the () topic in their proposals is an unconscious process. Monograph highlights shortly also internal effects, distortions and delusions in human mind. At the end of the study there are some tips for successful competition proposal." The paperback book is in Finnish with English summary. A limited edition is numbered and with special binding. P.S. Previously, almost all architects were men. In the 90s, there were already equal numbers of men and women among architecture students. After year 2000 the majority of students have been women. And in 2024 three-quarters of new architecture students were women. (read more: Arkkitehtiuutiset 5/2024) It seems that the tipping point was reached at the beginning of the millennium. The proportion of women increased in the preparation and evaluation of entrance exam tasks. This seems to have led to the success of female applicants. Such a gender shift cannot fail to have an impact elsewhere. The architecture competition programs and evaluation of proposals are also changing.
